Evan and Rose (1991)
Every summer day down here is beautiful, because every day is filled with memories. We especially treasure spending time, as we did last weekend, with some of our old friends. We visited Dennis and Becky Forney, whom we met 40 years ago in Lewes when Dennis was a young newspaper writer and publisher, in their retirement near St. Michael’s, MD, and we also loved seeing dearest high school friends from Atlanta GA who were passing through town (Molly and Jeff Lane, pictured with us Sunday evening in Lewes).
We had a terrific breakfast with the Forneys at Two If By Sea on Tilghman Island, MD, and answered the eternal question of which came first, chicken or egg. With chef Henry Miller’s delicious Tilghman Benedict, they both appeared at the same time:-)
Capturing early morning, and then sunset, on the beach the other day, reminded me that our human lives are so fleeting—but that glorious nature goes on and on. Or at least, it should. That, my friends, is largely up to us—as our precious planet overheats, floods, etc., we can’t afford to miss this last chance to save it for the children of the future.
While I’m still here, though, may I cherish every relationship (old and new) that I’m blessed with…
SONG: “OLD FRIENDS/BOOKENDS”
FEATURED AUTHOR: Erin Strybis
This week I want to spotlight my former editor at Living Lutheran magazine, Erin Strybis. Erin always edited my essays with care and insight, and I was sad when she moved on from that position. But I’m happy to report that Erin the WRITER is busier than ever, with her newsletter, Nourish, and a brand new book! The Beauty of Motherhood: Grace-Filled Devotions for the Early Years, co-authored with Kimberly Knowle-Zeller, is a lovely collection of meditations on the joys and challenges of parenting little ones. A very spiritual and meaningful gift for any young mom you know…
BLOG PREVIEW: Well, we did it. We caught the new blockbuster movie Barbie. What did we think? Inquiring minds can find out tomorrow over at Working Title.
INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future…Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.” ~Maya Angelou
Over the weekend, I did indeed take a much-needed break from wrestling with life’s problems. Guess what? They showed up again, right on cue, yesterday morning—but now, happily refreshed, I’m ready to forge onward.
Don’t wait for a special weekend—carve out some time (this week, this DAY) to set aside your worries and gain perspective. You deserve it!
