Goodness Gracious
Tina Turner's words of wisdom! Yes, You DO like kale (trust me)! My latest featured author! And more...
GOOD morning!!
Steve and the kids used to bike to Cape Henlopen State Park for sunrise, long long ago
What are some “good” things in your life? The word is bandied about, much like “love” (how can “I love my family” and “I love double-stuff Oreos” involve the same word?) To me, “good” is a rock-solid word, meaning what is fine and positive and helpful and valuable in life.
Here are some “goodies” for your week…
RECIPE: There seem to be two camps when it comes to kale: those who hate it, and those who tolerate it because it’s so nutritious. Rarely have I encountered someone who actually adores this somewhat bitter, crunchy, dark green veg. If you, like me, struggle with kale, may I suggest this wonderful roasted kale salad recipe, created by Chef (and son) Patrick? It’s GOOD (the maple-bacon vinaigrette is just delicious)!
Here’s Pat’s recipe, published in Fifth Season Fresh…

NEW MOVIE: I often share short videos here, but today I’m recommending a film still playing in theaters. You Hurt My Feelings is a terrific, thoughtful comedy about a writer (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who overhears her therapist husband say that he doesn’t like her latest book (even though he’s raved about it to her). The movie also explores several other types of relationships: sisters and mother—friends—parents and offspring, and poses the question: is it ever OK to be a little dishonest in the name of love?
FEATURED AUTHOR: Rochelle Melander
Rochelle Melander is a very talented and prolific writer and writing coach. She’s written 11 books for adults, and a fabulous book for young people, Mightier Than the Sword, in which Rochelle shares stories of famous folks whose writing changed the world. Rochelle’s books about the craft of writing are both practical and motivational (Write-a-Thon: Write Your Book in 26 Days inspired me to do just that!) As editor of the devotional The Word in Season, she gave me some wonderful early opportunities to publish some of my work, and I will always be grateful. Go Rochelle!!
TRAVELS WITH ELISE AND STEVE (DO THIS, NOT THAT):
DON’T: Go crazy with the souvenirs. We are not gifted souvenir buyers, quite the contrary. We hurriedly buy things that 1) we truly will never use/look at/consume or 2) the “lucky” recipients will be less than enthused about. In Italy, for instance, we really wanted to buy Aiden and Peter special toys. So, we snapped up two wooden marionette Pinocchios at a street market in Florence. Alas, once unwrapped at home, the dolls’ strings became quickly, hopelessly—and permanently— tangled. Puppet fail!!
DO: Buy postcards instead! Yes, I know no one mails them anymore, but that is NOT the point. Postcards always have beautiful photos (nicer than any I could take), are very inexpensive, and are perfect mementos. They also pack neatly in a carry on (unlike some marionettes I could mention). Carry on, my friends!
MUCH prettier than the pictures we took in this beautiful city!!
BLOG PREVIEW: If you’ve been wondering about the “tradwife” craze, wonder no more. Get the facts at Working Title tomorrow!
And finally, as promised…wisdom from the late, great Tina…
INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“Devote yourself to becoming the type of person who can always bring out the goodness in yourself and others. That’s how to create real value, satisfaction, and sweetness in life.” - Tina Turner
I hope you have a week filled with goodness—and do spread that sweet goodness around!!
Thumbs up from little Aiden!
Elise-I appreciate that you are bringing back the True meaning of "good."
It's been hijacked by emotionally stronger words when it is such a solid word. Thank you for the reminder.
And I love the Tina Turner quote. Can't believe she is gone. What an icon.
