E-Musings Newsletter #100!!!
Celebrating by sharing some (NOT 100!) favorites with my favorite readers!
I swear I began putting E-Musing #100 together with the lofty goal of sharing 100 resources (songs, videos, books, recipes, travel tips, etc. etc.) But then it struck me—I would never read anything that long, AND I WRITE THIS! So, here is a tiny fraction of 100 cool things (and a 100 million thanks for your ongoing support!)
CLASSIC TV: JULIE & CAROL AT CARNEGIE HALL (1962)
Two of my favorite musical comedy buddies, ever! Enjoy this clip from the very first “Julie & Carol” special—notice, not only how funny Julie is, but how Carol’s voice is so surprisingly great.
And if you liked that, check out Julie’s recent podcast interview with Julia Louis Dreyfus—it’s a fabulous conversation that includes Julie’s tribute to her dear friend Carol!
PODCAST: WISER THAN ME CONVERSATION WITH JULIE ANDREWS
Mine was not the House O’ Traditions, growing up (unless you count the daily ceremonial Emptying of the Ashtrays.) So of course I LOVE reading about, and watching, other families and THEIR passed-along traditions and artistry. Here’s a little gem…
SHORT VIDEO: HOME OF MY MEMORIES
MOVIE PREVIEW (HOPE YOU’RE PATIENT!)
I was casting about for a “100” something for the newsletter and discovered this! Coming in 2115 (not a typo) to whatever a movie theater near your descendants will look like—
NOVELTY NUMBERS (FOOD INSPIRED):
I’m a sucker for a good novelty song, and here are three really cute, food-related ones! Enjoy!
“Lime Jell-O Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise”
Nostalgic about 1950’s ladies’ luncheon fare? After you listen to this hilarious number performed by William Bolcom and Joan Morris, you won’t be!
“Crudites” is a clever, appetizer-y takeoff on the classic Latin Christmas carol “Gaudete…”
and here’s a really weird (but funny) Cole Porter ditty about a very ambitious shellfish…
“The Tale of the Oyster”
ESSAY: I'M PUTTING THE TIRED IN RETIRED AND IT'S WONDERFUL
Speaking of 100, I feel that old some days, between the bum knees and the sad state of the world. I am finding comfort and joy in snoozing as my retirement hobby! My latest for Next Avenue magazine…
CHRISTMAS MUSIC FAVORITES (PART ONE):
This week and next, I’m sharing some beautiful Christmas music. I played both of the following albums for years as background music during the Advent Prayer Center my friend Marda and I created at our church. The YouTube links will take you to the featured songs, but also to the whole album playlists!
ALBUM: CHRISTMAS EVE BY DAVID LANZ
ALBUM: CELTIC CHRISTMAS (WINDHAM HILL SAMPLER)
BLOG PREVIEW: FUN ‘N FRUGAL LAST MINUTE GIFT IDEAS!
But it’s already December 17th!!! you say? Don’t panic! Not too late to find the perfect gift for that special someone (who couldn’t be all that special or you would’ve shopped earlier, amirite?) Here are the BEST last minute gift ideas…
(MAYBE NOT SO) INSPIRATIONAL (BUT FUNNY) QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
As we zoom into Christmas week, let’s keep Erma’s wise comment in mind. There is no need to WRAP the six shrimp forks from your dog; a gift tag with “Love, Fido” is JUST FINE (let’s not be ridiculous)!!
